St. Elias Community School

Haines Junction, YT

St. Elias Community School is as unique as the mountain range for which it is named. From its beginnings in the 1950’s at a highway camp, the school has relocated and grown, with the last addition completed in 1994. Today our school staff of full and part time educators serve 142 students from Kindergarten to grade 12, about 50% of whom are of First Nations ancestry. Most of our classes are combinations of two grades, and our challenge is to provide great educational opportunities for both elementary and secondary students.

About St. Elias Community School

Home to the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations, St. Elias Community School is one of 8 Yukon schools who have joined the newly established First Nation School Board (FNSB) in the Yukon.  Southern Tutchone is the traditional language of Champagne and Aishihik First Nations people.

In the beautiful mountain valleys of Dakwäkäda (Haines Junction),
St. Elias Community School is surrounded by forests, lakes and glacier-topped mountains. We are less than two hours’ drive from Whitehorse and participate in many sports tournaments with teams from the city. As well, our K4 to Grade 12 classes follow British Columbia curriculum with Yukon First Nations and Champagne and Aishihik First Nations content as the foundation.
