About Joamie Ilinniarvik School
We are a kindergarten to grade five, dual language (Inuktitut and English) school located in Iqaluit, Nunavut's capital.
Our school enjoys a strong connection with our students' parents and a high level of community support. We are lucky to have the support of the Joamie Parent Committee (JPC). This committee of enthusiastic and dedicated parents work diligently and cooperatively with the school and their past endeavours have raised thousands of dollars for school programs.
At Joamie, we offer language instruction in Inuktitut and English. We also offer French as a second language once a day to our grade four and five students.
Our programming emphasizes literacy, math, science and technology, communication and thinking skills. We also focus on our cultural program, which celebrates the heritage and traditions of all our students.
We also have spirit teams within our school to engage our students and have our different grade levels interact with each other. We have six teams, each associated with an arctic animal. At least once a month, students and staff can earn points for their spirit team. It's all in good fun but at the end of the year, we do declare a winner and hang a banner in the winning spirit team's honour.
Finally, our school day does not look like traditional schools as we break for lunch for 1 hour and 15 minutes. This means that the Joamie school day does not end until 3:40pm.
