About Louie Norwegian School
Named after Chief Louie Norwegian, our school has a long and proud history in Jean Marie River. Under the leadership of Chief Louie, the original school was built by the people of JMR in 1951, so that the children of the community could go to school here (up to grade 6) and not have to leave at such a young age. Local people sold lumber and fish to raise money to purchase the logs for the school. These elders have left wonderful legacy for the youth of our village.
Our new school was constructed in the 1980’s and has served the children of Jean Marie River well. Jean Marie First Nation offers it’s building to the school for Physical Education, concerts, feasts etc.
At Louie Norwegian School, we utilize our camp at Jackfish Creek for on-the-land experiences in the spring and fall. We also have a “Take a Kid Trapping” program each winter for our students to experience traditional skills on the land with a local elder.
