Second Step Strategies for a Safer Tomorrow
Second Step is a holistic approach to social-emotional learning (SEL) offering programs for schools and families to use to encourage children to grow, learn, and thrive. The program teaches children to think about other’s feelings, to solve problems cooperatively, and to manage their anger in a positive way. At Selkirk, this is a foundational program upon which we can meet the Physical and Health Education as well as Career Education competencies, and most importantly, help students develop emotional literacy.
Classroom teachers are expected to teach one lesson per week until the program is complete. Each lesson takes about 25 minutes.
The Second Step program teaches skills in three areas:
1. Empathy Skills
2. Impulse Control
3. Self Regulation
It also includes a Child Protection Unit for K-5 which teaches students how to recognize, report, and refuse unsafe situations.
